Haitians with Temporary Protected Status in Ohio Brace for Supreme Court Ruling

The U.S. Supreme Court is set to issue a decision that could significantly impact the lives of thousands of Haitians living in Ohio under Temporary Protected Status (TPS). TPS was granted to Haitians following the devastating 2010 earthquake that struck the island nation.

About 5,400 Haitians currently reside in Ohio under TPS, which was initially set to expire in 2018 but has been extended multiple times.

TPS was designed to provide protection and work authorization to foreign nationals whose home countries are experiencing conflict, natural disasters, or other conditions that prevent them from safely returning.

In the case before the Supreme Court, the Biden administration has argued that the Trump administration's effort to end TPS for Haitians was unlawful. In response, several advocacy groups, including the Ohio Immigrant Alliance, have called on Congress to pass legislation making TPS a permanent fixture of U.S. law.

Congresswoman Joyce Beatty (D-OH), who represents many of the Haitians living in central Ohio, has been a vocal supporter of TPS, saying 'it's time for Congress to act and give these individuals and their families the peace of mind they so desperately need.'

According to a study by the Center for American Progress, the termination of TPS for Haitians could lead to the loss of nearly $1 billion in economic activity over the next decade.

Despite concerns from lawmakers and advocacy groups, the Supreme Court has historically had a mixed track record in supporting immigrant rights. In 2020, the court ruled 5-4 in Batalla Vidal v. Barr that it was lawful for the Trump administration to end TPS for El Salvadorans, Hondurans, and Nicaraguans.

For Haitians living in Ohio, the stakes are high. While a ruling in the Biden administration's favor could bring a measure of relief, a decision in favor of the Trump administration could upend the lives of thousands of people who have made the United States their home.
