How Cristiano Ronaldo Became a 'Genius', and Why He Never Chose Lionel Messi for Ballon d'Or

The former Portugal national team coach explains the emotional and professional reasons behind his choice in the Ballon d'Or voting.

Scolari, who led the Portuguese national team from 2003 to 2008, shares an interesting perspective on the two greatest players of the modern era. According to him, the difference between Messi and Ronaldo lies in their origins, which have significantly impacted his views on both players over the years.

In an interview with program Abre Aspas, Scolari reminisces about a direct conversation he had with the Argentine star: "Messi told me: 'Boss, you never chose me for Ballon d'Or, you always chose Cristiano.' And I replied: 'I had to choose Cristiano, he’s like a son to me.' Messi is a genius. If he closes his eyes, he knows where the ball is. Cristiano wasn't born a genius. He became one through his will and dedication."

The Brazilian coach also highlights Ronaldo's almost obsessive work ethic, which began to show in his early days at Manchester United. Scolari reveals that he often received calls from Sir Alex Ferguson, who was concerned about the young striker's excessive individual training after matches.

"Ferguson would call me and say, 'Scolari, tell him not to take free kicks today, because he’s already taken 30 here.' Then he'd come to the national team and want to take 30 more. I'd say, 'Good grief, you've done that already.' But that’s his dedication," Scolari explained.

Scolari is convinced Ronaldo will achieve the historic milestone of 1,000 goals: "I met him a year ago and asked, 'Are you chasing 1,000 goals? Are you really after it?' And he replied, 'No, coach, no.' And I said, 'Ah... you can’t fool me.' I think he’s going to achieve it."

One of Scolari’s most memorable moments came when he had to inform Ronaldo about his father's passing, just before a crucial match in Moscow. Ronaldo’s reaction only strengthened their bond, going beyond the limits of the pitch.

"They call me and tell me what’s happened. I think I need to pass on the news to him. I call him into my room, hug him, cry with him, and tell him he’s free to go. And he says, 'The national team first. My dad would want me to play.' And he was the best player on the pitch in that game. That’s how I built a stronger friendship with his family too," Scolari said, getting emotional.

The year 2026 marks what many see as the final chapter of the biggest rivalry in football history as the World Cup returns to North America, and Ronaldo and Messi prepare for their sixth appearance in the tournament – a new record. For Ronaldo, the 2026 tournament is more than just a farewell; it’s his last chance to win the one major trophy missing from his cabinet. Meanwhile, Messi remains the heartbeat of the reigning World Cup winners, and his readiness to lead Argentina to another title makes them one of the top favorites to defend their crown in the United States.
