TEMPO.CO - Former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was killed in a surprise Israeli and US attack on Tehran, according to reports from Israeli media on March 1, 2026.
The attack targeted Ahmadinejad's residence in Narnak, northeast of the city, killing him and several guards, as reported by Iranian media outlets.
International reports suggest the strike occurred on the night of Saturday, March 1st.
Israeli media claim this assassination is part of an ongoing campaign targeting senior Iranian figures.
Ahmadinejad served two terms as Iran's President from 2005 to 2013, known for his hardline stance towards the West and his vocal support for Iran's nuclear program.
His presidency was also marked by the disputed 2009 election and the subsequent mass protests that swept across the country.
Prior to his presidential term, Ahmadinejad held positions as the governor of Ardabil Province and the mayor of Tehran, following which he was appointed to the Expediency Discernment Council by the then Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Ahmadinejad's death comes just hours after the reported killing of 86-year-old Khamenei by an Israeli-US attack.
