The Louisville Kings were crowned UFL champions over the weekend, and the team and city are planning a grand celebration this week.
After a thrilling come-from-behind win in the UFL championship game on Saturday, the celebration is far from over for the Louisville Kings and their dedicated fans.
Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg shared the exciting news on social media, stating that a public celebration for the team is in the works.
According to the Louisville Sports Commission, the team is bringing home more than just a trophy.
"Besides the fact that we're all still on a high from it and we're all so excited, you know, the Kings being able to be second in overall attendance in their inaugural year is a remarkable feat," said Julie Howell, chief revenue officer for the Louisville Sports Commission.
Howell highlights that having a championship UFL team creates a ripple effect across Kentucky.
"People see when you take your event or your team to Louisville, the community supports it. The community comes out. It is a brand-new team that no one knew anything about, and they are averaging more than 10,000 people a game," Howell added.
As the city prepares for a grand celebration, Howell's office is working closely with the team to bring exciting plans to the community.
"We know the community is excited to hear those plans, so there will be a celebration sometime this week," she said.
Strong relationships with Louisville's professional teams and team success contribute to the commission's non-profit opening doors for student-athletes in the community.
"Parts of the community where maybe certain sports aren't offered, or kids aren't playing because they don't have the appropriate resources or the appropriate equipment, and we work to remove those barriers to ensure every young person in Louisville has an opportunity to participate in sports," Howell explained.
The Louisville Sports Commission also credits Soccer Holdings LLC for reaching a deal with the Kings, providing them with an excellent home field to play on and build a supportive fan base.
