Max Verstappen Threatens to Retire from F1 Early if 2026 Engine Regulations Stumble!

Max Verstappen, the star driver of Red Bull Racing, has just made his most serious threat yet about his future in Formula 1 (F1). Verstappen has made it clear that he's ready to hang up his racing boots if the delayed engine regulations for the 2026 season are not sorted out once and for all.

Earlier, the FIA announced its plan to revise the 2026 engine regulations with a 60:40 split between internal combustion engines and electric components, along with increased fuel flow. Verstappen personally welcomed the draft changes and described them as a much-needed direction for F1.

The issue, however, is that no consensus has been reached among all the engine manufacturers competing in the sport.

Verstappen's frustration boiled over during the qualifying session for the 2026 Canadian GP. When asked about his future if the engine regulations fail to change and remain stuck in the old format for upcoming seasons, the Dutch driver gave a chilling response.

“If things stay like this, next year will be a very long year. And I don't want that,” Verstappen said, as quoted by Crash, May 24, 2026.

When pushed further about whether the regulation stalemate might make him actually quit, Verstappen no longer hid his frustration. He admitted that enduring the current complicated political situation in F1 was already taking a toll on his mental health.

“I can tell you now, if the situation stays like this... let's see. Mentally, I won't be able to handle this situation at all. Not at all,” he added.

In a surprising twist, Verstappen also ruled out the possibility of taking a long sabbatical to wait for the regulations to improve in the next season. If he decides to leave, it would mark the end of his F1 journey. For him, there are still many exciting things to do outside of racing.

Verstappen is well aware that the opposition to changing the engine regulations comes from rival teams that currently benefit from the current power unit landscape. That's why he urges FIA and FOM to be firm and prioritize the overall good of the sport, a view shared by Williams' driver Carlos Sainz.

“This is F1. It's that simple, and it's a bit humiliating. Some people who might have a slight advantage right now will try to complicate things. But if FIA and FOM are strong, they should just go for it,” Verstappen said.
