Spanyol has emerged as the top contender to win the 2026 World Cup, according to predictions made by Opta, a sports statistics company. The country's chances of winning the tournament were determined through 10,000 simulations using advanced computer models.
According to Opta's predictions, Spanyol has a 16.1% chance of winning the World Cup, surpassing several other top contenders, including France, England, Argentina, Portugal, and Brazil.
Not only do they have the highest chance of winning the tournament, but they also have the highest rate of advancing to the final with a 25.6% chance, far exceeding England's 19% chance.
On the other hand, Argentina, who won the 2022 World Cup, has been predicted to have a lower chance of winning the 2026 tournament, with only 12% chance.
However, Opta points out that Argentina is still considered a strong contender, along with other top teams, and is likely to make it far in the tournament.
The predictions were made by combining various factors, including betting odds, historical team performances, and current team strengths.
Intriguingly, the simulations also showed that one country, Curacao, never emerged as the winner, while several underdog teams managed to surprise by winning the tournament in at least one simulation, including Haiti, Cape Verde, Qatar, and the DR Congo.
Meanwhile, the three host countries have been predicted to have a low chance of winning the tournament, with Meksiko at 0.99%, Amerika Serikat at 1.21%, and Kanada at 0.52%.
The 2026 World Cup is set to be a historic event, with 48 countries participating for the first time ever. The tournament is scheduled to take place from June 11 to July 19, 2026, with a total of 104 matches to be played across the three host countries.
