A new round of direct talks between the US and Iran has been postponed after Vice-President JD Vance delayed a planned trip to Switzerland.
The White House announced late on Thursday that Vance would not be travelling to the talks, citing 'logistical complexities'.
Just a day earlier, the US had dropped its naval blockade of Iran following the two countries' agreement to a deal aimed at ending the conflict.
The deal also called for hostilities to cease in Lebanon, but a reported Israeli strike on Friday resulted in at least 47 deaths, sparking outrage in the region.
Hours before the White House statement, Hezbollah-linked Lebanese media reported that the talks were suspended due to ongoing Israeli air strikes in Lebanon.
An immediate ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah reportedly took effect at 16:00 local time (14:00 BST) following intense diplomatic efforts.
The agreement follows US President Donald Trump's announcement earlier this week that the US would terminate 'all sanctions' related to Iran, sparking a mix of reaction from international leaders.
Iran's Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, has approved the deal, stating that while he maintains a 'different view', Tehran will engage in 'in-person negotiations' with Washington in the future.
'We didn't meet out of desperation, Iran did – they are finished!'
In a further development, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has come under fire from US officials for his government's response to the deal.
'Israel must make it clear to the entire world that the blood of our sons and the security of our citizens are not up for bargaining,' National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir wrote.
Since the war between Israel, the US, and Iran broke out, over 3,900 people have been killed in Israeli attacks in Lebanon, with many women and children among them.
International efforts to negotiate an end to the conflict have increased in recent weeks, with Swiss officials confirming preparations for the postponed talks.
Iran's nuclear programme is among the key points for discussion in any future talks, as the deal signed between the US and Iran calls for Tehran to 'never have a nuclear weapon.'
US officials have confirmed that 'plans for the next round of negotiations have not been finalized' following the announcement of the US-Iran deal, but Washington 'looks forward to beginning technical talks as soon as possible.'
The Memorandum of Understanding agreed between the US and Iran includes provisions for the reconstruction of Iran, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, and the termination of US sanctions on Iran.
The agreement also states that 'all types of sanctions will be lifted immediately with no exceptions.'
Despite the announcement of the deal, fighting has continued in Lebanon, with both Israeli and Hezbollah forces engaging in strikes.
This has raised concerns that ongoing hostilities may undermine the chances of a successful long-term agreement between the US and Iran.
The deal signed earlier this week has been described as a 'new path forward' by US officials but remains a source of disagreement between Washington and Tehran.
'While there will be ongoing diplomatic efforts to address these disagreements, our focus remains on the successful implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding and beginning to rebuild the relationship between our countries,' a US official noted.
