Kona Beaches Closed Due to High Surf Warning

A High Surf Warning has been issued for Hawaii island shores, replacing the previous High Surf Advisory. This warning has led to the closure of several Kona beaches due to hazardous surf conditions.

According to Hawaii County emergency officials, Kahalu'u, La'aloa (Magic Sands), and Kohanaiki beaches are among those that have been closed. The closures were announced in a Sunday morning civil defense radio message.

The large, long-period south-southwest swell, combined with the King Tides, may cause significant wave run-up and widespread coastal flooding during the afternoon high tides. The National Weather Service predicts dangerously large, breaking waves of 10 to 15 feet, with high impacts.

Forecasters warn of very strong breaking waves and powerful currents, making it dangerous to navigate channel entrances. Additionally, there is a risk of flooding on beaches that are normally dry, minor coastal erosion, and saltwater inundation.

In contrast, the National Weather Service notes that very little swell energy is arriving along north-facing shores, resulting in tiny to flat surf.

The Big Island community is advised to exercise caution and follow the instructions of local authorities to ensure their safety.
